You are right, what i will do on thanksgiving is that I will have a controlled refeed thanksgiving meal, not an all you can eat cheat thanksgiving meal. There is a difference between an all you can eat cheat-meal and a controlled calories refeed meal.
A controlled-calorie refeed meal is just adding between 500 to 800 extra calories to your low calorie diet (so if your regular low calorie diet has about 1600 calories on that day you would be able to eat 2400 calories, and a good idea is to eat all those calories in the thanksgiving dinner at night with the family in one single meal. (in other words on that day it would be a good idea for many people to do the one meal a day diet, that way you would enjoy eating a lot because 2400 calories of food in one single meal can give you the right to even eat a piece of cake as part of those 2400 calories).
So in a refeed thanksgiving controlled calorie meal, you would only eat between 500 to 800 calories extras on that day.
But if you decide that life is short and that thanksgiving is just one day and to engage in an all you can eat cheat thanksgiving day it would mean that you would ingest about 10,000 calories which is a lot more than 2400 calories
many people tend to eat 10,000 calories on thanksgiving. Because on that day from morning until bedtime many people eat non-stop so it is easy to ingest between 5000 and 10,000 calories on that day. And that's real damage, because an extra pound of body-weight requires 3500 calories extras over our regular normal calorie intake to maintain our body weight. So if your body needs about 2000 calories to maintain its body weight, and you eat 10,000 on thanksgiving, you would have eaten 8000 extra calories, divided by 3500, its about 2.28 extra lbs that you would gain on that day, and you would have to add extra pounds gained from water retention, from all the carbohydrates and sugars. So it is very easy for many people to gain about 6 lbs. of body weight in one thanksgiving binge eating day. But that won't happen if you choose to have a controlled calorie refeed thanksgiving meal (which requires a will power as well) because it is not easy to say no to all the great tasting food on that day.
But no pain, no gain, even on thanksgiving and christmas we should use our will power in order not to destroy weeks and weeks of hard labor exercising, money and dieting
